How did Retheria begin?
Retheria was started out of frustration from other servers unable to provide a enjoyable, secure play environment. There was nothing more frustrating for our first group of members and maybe even yourself then building a station, fleet, and support ships along with building a storyline/reputation with another group(s) and then find a griefer come in and disrupt the enjoyment or for the server to disappear because no one could be bothered to get to it or help players with concerns. So after browsing servers and running into the same issue, it was decided to create a new central experience with the commitment to our community to provide a fun environment where we can enjoy the game as a community.
Why a Role Play Server?
Space Engineers is design to simulate space, and a lot of the functions are built around reality and how to make things work with physics and so forth. Role-play is about telling a story, it is not always about yelling at someone in old English or about beaming scotty somewhere. Many of our members including myself have experience with a wide range of RPG Games from text based, table top, and simulators. Its with this knowledge we decided to combine aspects of all of them which we think will benefit our communities experience and provide a much more rich and indepth experience of Space Engineers. Role Play rules will likely follow in the near future!
Is the server dedicated at a data center or someones home?
It is hosted by a data center in New York, we considered hosting it on a dedicated PC in someones home. As their are clearly benefits to both. However from experience with others servers we found having the support of a data center if technical issues arose or other problems with the host itself the speed of the server returning to playable state was much faster and smoother then having it at someones house who was the sole person responsible for its operation. Life happens, and we don't want to cause one persons life to disrupt everyone's experience.
Is the server public or whitelisted?
A little bit of both, any member who registers and fills out a application/character sheet will be reviewed and approved by one of many members. Part of the process is to apply to a usergroup on the forums that has specific access to a forum which contains the server password. With this password you can now login to the server and play the game. This removes the direct involvement of a Admin, makes the playerbase more of a community as we all a say in who plays here. In the case a griefer gets through the system the offender is banned from the forums/game and the password is changed but those still "whitelisted" are able to play.
What if I am griefed?
The staff are here to help you! You MUST know the name of the ship that was griefed for us to do anything. The server backs up regularly and through these backups we can pinpoint the location of the grief ship. Location of players/ships around that griefed ship overtime and other information. This will allow staff to pinpoint where the ship went, but also who griefed the grid and issue punishment accordingly. Once that information is compiled the grief'd ship will be re-spawned from a previous save game and returned to the player. This ensures fairness to everyone in the server and prevents the exploitation of staff.
